We’re sorry to say that the odds are good you will deal with cellulite at some point—if you aren’t already seeing the orange peel-like texture on your buttocks or thighs! The harmless but unwelcome cosmetic skin condition is incredibly common. Up to 90 percent of all women (and about 10 percent of men) develop the annoying dimpling, which can make wearing a swimsuit or other revealing clothing a less appealing prospect. The two main options are BodyFX and Evolve Trim, which both use radiofrequency energy and other strategies to help contour the body, tighten skin, and provide a sleeker and smoother look. Wondering which to choose? Take it from us: All you have to know is that you want to do something about your cellulite! Our experienced, physician-led team will work directly with you to provide guidance t0 create an effective plan tailored to your unique goals.
Known as dimpling, cottage cheese thighs, orange peel skin, and other unflattering names, cellulite is the result of multiple factors coming together beneath the surface of the skin. Understanding how treatments work starts with understanding how the small depressions develop.
Fibrous bands of collagen known as septae are found throughout the skin, where they serve as anchors connecting the underside of the skin’s surface to the layer of tissue below. Distributed around these septae are fat cells, which store energy to be released when needed. If a person routinely consumes more calories than they spend, these fat cells tend to get larger as they store more and more. In women, this storage is especially common on the lower half: the hips, thighs, and buttocks.
When fat cells grow larger, they basically need more room, so they begin to push against each other, the septae, and the underside of the skin’s surface. This causes the surface to expand outward. Unfortunately, fibrous septae tethered to the skin cause the surface immediately above to resist this expansion, resulting in small puckers or divots scattered across the area. Think of this process as overstuffing a pillow that has threads connecting each side in the middle. The excess stuffing will cause the pillow’s sides to bulge out, but a small dimple will indicate everywhere a thread is pulling down from the underside.
As you can see, while cellulite is often thought of as a fat problem, it is actually more complex, involving collagen, thinning skin, and other factors. That said, fat reduction can help to reduce the severity of cellulite—although lifestyle changes are not typically enough.
Losing weight by reducing calorie intake and burning more calories with exercise is fantastic for your health, but it does not actually make fat cells go away. Instead, large fat cells shrink. That means there are still just as many of them as before below the surface, crowding each other.
Actually removing the excess fat cells, however, can make a difference to body contours and cellulite!
Since excess fat puts pressure on the septae and skin, reducing the number of fat cells in an area marked by cellulite can help to improve the appearance of telltale dimpling. Causing tissues to contract can also give the area a tighter and firmer look, while encouraging collagen production makes the surface thicker and less prone to showing dimples.
Both the BodyFX device and Evolve Trim cellulite treatments use radiofrequency energy to generate heat that causes tissue contraction and damage to fat cells, leading some people to compare the results to “liposuction without surgery.”
As deep tissues heat, vacuum suction technology and controlled pulses of energy further enhances the cellulite treatment’s effectiveness, resulting in a smoother look and texture.
Anyone who wants to address unwanted dimpling on their thighs or buttocks at Fresh Faces Rx will start with a consultation. We can take a look at the extent of the condition, talk to you about your cosmetic goals, and develop a plan that makes use of the ideal technology for you.
Patients typically describe the actual cellulite treatment process as comfortable. Your skin in the targeted area will warm up as the radiofrequency energy generates heat below the surface, and you’ll feel a gentle pull or tugging sensation as the vacuum works in concert with the RF energy. The devices are equipped with monitoring technology that keeps us updated on the skin’s temperature in real time. This is for both safety and comfort.
Multiple areas of the body can be treated for cellulite simultaneously, making this an ideal strategy for anyone who wants a convenient solution to the problem of dimpled skin—and would like slimmer and sleeker body contours as well!
A single cellulite treatment session can take from 30 to 60 minutes, with specifics depending on the size of the area or areas being treated.
The treated area will likely appear red and feel a bit warm in the hours after your cellulite reduction session. This is normal and will go away without any special care. In fact, no recovery period or downtime are necessary. You can get right back to doing whatever you’d like as soon as you feel comfortable!
Tissue contraction, the breakdown of fat cells, collagen generation, and other benefits of the RF energy treatments develop gradually. The effects of cellulite treatments are cumulative, so multiple sessions will be needed—with the specific number depending on your unique circumstances and desired results. Patients tend to start to see visible improvements in their cellulite after their first few sessions, with the skin continuing to improve in quality and texture as time goes on.
