KYBELLA® (deoxycholic acid) injection is the first and only FDA-approved injectable treatment that is used in adults to improve the appearance and profile of moderate to severe fat below the chin (submental fat), also called “double chin.” It is not known if KYBELLA® is safe and effective in children less than 18 years of age. It is not known if KYBELLA® is safe and effective for use outside of the submental area.

A double chin, also known as submental fat, is caused by a buildup of fat in the area under the chin. This can be due to various factors, including weight gain, genetics, and aging. Losing weight and maintaining a healthy diet and exercise routine can help reduce the appearance of a double chin. Specific cosmetic treatments, such as liposuction, and Kybella, can also remove excess fat.

How does KYBELLA® work?

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, KYBELLA® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat.

How many treatments will I need?

You and your doctor will customize your KYBELLA® treatment regimen based on your desired chin profile, including how many treatments you need. Many patients experience visible results in 2 to 4 treatment sessions. During these sessions, your HCP will administer KYBELLA® into the fat under your chin using multiple injections. Up to 6 treatment sessions may be administered no less than one month apart.

What if I have sagging skin under my chin?

Many people respond well to combination therapy with radiofrequency skin-tightening under the chin; try Mini-Fx at Fresh Faces Rx.

How long does Kybella last?

The effects of Kybella are considered permanent, as the destroyed fat cells will not be able to store or accumulate fat again. However, it’s important to note that the treatment will not prevent future weight gain. If a person gains significant weight after treatment, the double chin may reappear. The results of Kybella treatment can be seen within 2-4 weeks after the first treatment, with optimal results usually seen after 2-4 treatments.

How painful is Kybella?

Pain is subjective, so the level of discomfort experienced during treatment can vary from person to person. Some patients report feeling mild discomfort during the injections, while others report experiencing minimal pain. Your healthcare provider may apply a numbing cream or ice pack to the area before the injections to help reduce discomfort. The procedure typically takes about 15-20 minutes.

After the procedure, patients may experience swelling, redness, and/or bruising in the treated area, which is normal and typically subsides within a few days. Other possible side effects include numbness, tingling, and pain in the treatment area, and these side effects are temporary and will go away in a few days.

You should avoid strenuous activity and exposure to excessive heat or sunlight for the first 24 hours after treatment.
